Turkmenistan elected vice president of 68th Session of UN General AssemblySpeaking at a government video-conference, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated the Turkmen people on the good news coming from the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA). With the unanimous support of 193 UN member states Turkmenistan has been elected Vice-President of the 68th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The head of state stressed that Turkmenistan with its legal status of permanent neutrality recognized by all UN member states has taken an active stance in the international affairs. According to the head of state, Turkmenistan has proven to be a responsible member and partner of the world's largest international organization in preserving and maintaining political stability in the region and the world and developing relations of friendship and cooperation between states.

In connection with Turkmenistan’s election as Vice-President of the 68th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry held a briefing for the national and international mass media. The briefing was also attended by the Foreign Ministry staff, Ambassadors of foreign countries and heads of international organizations in Ashgabat, academic staff and students of the Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, as well as scientists and experts.

The briefing covered the main aspects of partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations as part of implementation of important international initiatives put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to ensure peace, security and sustainable development.

The briefing participants were updated on the progress in implementing the Concept of the Foreign Policy of Turkmenistan for 2013-2017, which is the guiding document for the diplomatic service of the country at the current stage.

Turkmenistan has been elected Vice-President of the UN General Assembly for the third time. Previously, Turkmenistan was elected Vice-President of the 62nd and 64th sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2007 and 2009  respectively.
